Flu Shots 2018

Did you know that one in four New Zealanders are affected with influenza each year?

The 2018 influenza season is upon us and Helios Integrative Medical Centre  is here to help you prepare. Flu shots can be booked through our reception or you can ask your GP or nurse if you’re already scheduled to attend the clinic.

Annual influenza immunisation is the best protection you can get. Following national guidelines, we especially want to immunise those most at-risk of complications:

  • Pregnant women (any trimester),
  • People aged 65 years and older,
  • Children aged 4 years or under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness or have a history of significant respiratory illness, and
  • People aged 65 years and under with medical conditions as outlined on https://www.fightflu.co.nz

Influenza can carried by individuals who may not feel sick and can be found anywhere. Also, just because you are healthy and fit does not mean that you are immune to contracting the virus. Fit and healthy people have ended up in the hospital or even dead from this serious illness.

Some people are concerned with receiving the vaccine but let us assure you that the vaccine cannot give you influenza. It works by providing your body with fragments of the virus and stimulates the immune system to make antibodies that protect against circulating viruses. Some people may see a reaction that is red and sore at the vaccine site and others may feel unwell for a day or two. Also, despite what you may read on social media, this immunisation does not contain thiomersal or mercury.

The flu shot will not guarantee you won’t contract some other strain of the flu, but it will protect you from the four strains that are most likely to affect our population.

Protect yourself and those around you by getting your flu shot today!
